Viparita Karani
Stay Cool with Easy
Shoulder Stand
(vip-par-ee-tah car-AHN-ee)
viparita = turned around, reversed, inverted
karani = doing, making, action
viparita Karani
is a Sanskrit term that refers to the “action of
inverting.” Sometimes called a “fountain of youth” pose, ancient yogis
proclaimed this one simple posture would “destroy” old age and death.
“You will become an adept in all the worlds and will not perish even at world
dissolution” (Gheranda Samhita 3.36) and after six months of practice, “grey
hairs and wrinkles become inconspicuous” (Hatha Yoga Pradipika 3.82).
While these promises point to the esoteric heart of yoga teachings—
awakening to our immortal, spiritual nature which is untouched by aging
or death—practitioners will also find that this pose offers healing and
restoration to the mind and body. Viparita Karani cools and calms the nervous
system. Yoga postures that invert the legs above the heart help to reverse
the normal downward flow of energy. This easy shoulder stand forms a
foundation for spinal alignment. It brings both energy and soothing qualities
to restore and rejuvenate the nervous system, the body and the mind.
Practice this posture to align and relax the spinal column in preparation
for meditation.
Those with cardiovascular or cervical spine considerations should consult a
physician or personal yoga instructor before practicing inversions.
