If the devotee's attention and

actions are not engaged in purposeful

endeavors, confusion may be experi-

enced. For this reason, it is important

to adhere to routines of orderly living

and meditation practice which will

contribute to mental and emotional

stability. It is also helpful to obtain

sufficient sleep and choose nourishing

foods. There is no need to fear the

awakening of your own energies. Live

a balanced life and let natural spiritual

growth occur.

Extreme effort to awaken or work

with kundalini energies is not recom-

mended. The most useful approach is

to adopt lifestyle regimens and spiri-

tual practices that prepare the mind

and body to be receptive, and to gently

coax dormant forces to become active.

They will then move and circulate as

determined by the intelligence which

is innate to them.

Clarity of awareness and feelings of

lightness and exhilaration that may be

experienced are normal. Uncontrolled

laughing, crying, or other symptoms

of emotional catharsis, should not be

dramatized. If flows of energy seem to

be too dynamic, inhale deeply, then

exhale and relax. Encourage them to

flow deeply within rather than allow

physical or emotional reactions to

occur. Kundalini energies can be

regulated by gentle application of

will power or intention. Allow them

to perform their transformative and

awareness-clearing work.

Visions, perceptions of brilliant

light, a sense of the oneness of life and

of having transcended the boundaries

of space and time, feelings of love

and compassion for all living things,

and extreme joy may be experienced

when the upward flowing currents of

kundalini energy stimulate certain

brain centers. While such percep-

tions can be enjoyable and attractive,

it should be remembered that what is

perceived is not what you are, or the

ultimate realization to have.

Within the spinal pathway through

which kundalini energies ascend are

three channels, starting at the base

chakra and going to the higher brain.

The two outer channels have gross

and subtle astral characteristics. The

innermost channel, "the pathway of

God," has fine causal characteristics.

Meditators who are intent on Self- and

God-discovery are advised to become

aware of kundalini energies moving

upward through this channel.

During preliminary stages of

meditation, when kundalini energies

enliven the chakras, their sounds and

lights may be perceived. As life force

ascends through the central channel

in the spine, it may be perceived as a

pleasurable sensation or as a mild elec-

tric current. It may ascend smoothly

to the crown chakra or its flow may

be blocked at one of the chakras. If

a blockage is encountered, do not

despair; it will eventually be removed.
